One of the most popular Lightning Ridge attractions is the Opal Mine Adventure, Walk In Mine. This experience is something like no other. It is fun, educational and unique.

The moment you arrive you are faced with some fun photo ops for the kids and endless things to discover. If you want to jump straight into the opal mine experience, grab yourself a hard hat and away you go.

As you navigate your way through the Opal Mine Adventure underground mine tour, you are treated to a glimpse of what life is like as an opal miner. You walk through the tunnels and look up in awe at the height of the original shafts. It is truly amazing how high they are.

We loved that the tour was self-guided because it meant we could explore at our own pace and take the time to really enjoy the experience. The staff have made the opal mine tour very family friendly and have injected humour through the use of props with additional photo opportunities for the kids.

The underground theatre is pretty cool too because you can take a seat and watch the very informative film about the history of Lightning Ridge opal mines. Don’t let the fact the video looks like it is from the 80’s fool you, it’s worth watching.

Fossick for Opals

When you finish the opal mine tour, you can go and fossick for your very own opals on-site. There is a large area full of fossicking piles that actually contain some overlooked gems. And whatever you find, you get to keep! You can stay for as long or as little as you like but if you plan on staying for the long haul make sure you bring a shovel, bucket, hat and some water!

When you have finished getting your hands dirty make sure you stop by the gift shop and check out the souvenirs (at prices to suit everyone) and have a chat to the friendly staff. Brad and his team are extremely knowledgeable and have a passion for what they do. They are professional, welcoming and want you to enjoy your experience when you visit Opal Mine Adventure.
