Everyone needs an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, and Ladies Well in the Chichester State Forest could be the perfect solution for you.
Situated in the Lower Barrington Tops, it is only a short 2 hours drive (approx.) from Newcastle or 3.5 hours from Sydney. This may seem like a lot if you aren’t used to day trips, however you will be pleasantly surprised by how picturesque the scenery is that the travel time won’t bother you.
Camping at Ladies Well – Allyn River Camp Ground
On your way there, you will pass the notorious ‘Boot Hill’, where you will find hundreds (possibly thousands) of sneakers, thongs, boots, skis, bras, singlets and anything else you can imagine tied to the fence and hung in the tree. Make sure you stop and soak it in, it’s not something you get to see everything day!
As you continue along the dirt road you will pass cows, some horses and other wildlife, but mostly more cows. After seeing the picture perfect countryside you will probably be expecting Ladies Well camping area (Allyn River Camp Ground) to be spectacular and I’ll be honest, it isn’t bad but it is nothing flash.
The Allyn River Camp Ground is a FREE camping ground with a few bins, long drops and campfire sites. But when you are camping what more could you possibly need?

Chichester State Forest – Ladies Well in all its glory
This serene hideaway is a gorgeous spot for families, couples and campers to enjoy the fresh water and soak in the sun. As soon as you park, you can hear the water cascading over the falls and you immediately feel like you are a million miles from civilisation. It is the best feeling in the world.
Swimming at Ladies Well is not for the faint hearted, while it is clean fresh water, it is freezing all year round. I don’t mean mildly chilly, I mean cold. But if you are fearless, a little bit nuts or a thrill seeker, you will have the time of your life jumping, flipping and diving into the deep pools.
If relaxing and soaking up the sun is more your style, you have plenty of warm rocks to choose from where you can enjoy watching everyone have the time of their lives!

Awesome!! Are you camping or just heading for a day trip?
You’ve hit on something in this post for me – what stops me about day trips is the travel time vs the time spent at a place! I gotta get over that…
I should add – that’s because I’m the sole driver and while I find driving useful, I don’t really enjoy it as such so it feels like more ‘bad’ time than ‘good’ on day trip.

We have always been big on road trips / day trips and just general exploring so time doesn’t worry us too much but this particular drive has so much beauty to be seen.
